Veterans Memorial Building Systems Upgrades

Description

Overview

An investigative assessment report was conducted in September 2023 to evaluate the Veterans Memorial Auditorium (VMA) building's structure and systems. The report concluded that the building’s perimeter foundation is structurally sound, and that the elements supporting the domed roof are performing as designed. However, the subgrade below the building has settled significantly. The settlement has damaged the floor slabs, internal sewer and roof drain plumbing, and electrical systems. The report also noted several electrical and mechanical deficiencies, as well as water intrusion in key areas. Various building systems need to undergo comprehensive upgrades and safety enhancements across various critical aspects, including but not limited to the gas line, steel beams, sewer system, roof drains, emergency lighting and guardrails, all of which are intended to ensure the building's structural integrity and longevity. Additionally, general maintenance work like painting walls, restoring entry doors, and replacing electrical equipment will contribute to the overall functionality and visual appeal of the VMA theater building for many years to come.

Funding

The estimated $15M project is funded by a one-time maintenance fund approved by the County Executive Office and the Marin County Board of Supervisors.

Public impacts

It is anticipated that the facility will be closed to the public during the project.
