On weekdays, Fairfax-Bolinas Road in West Marin is closed from Azalea Hill to Ridgecrest. On weekends, the road will be open, but traffic will be routed through a single-lane with controlled two-way access at milepost 5.73. See project webpage for details. Veterans Memorial Building Upgrades

Description

Overview

An investigative assessment report was conducted in September 2023 to evaluate the Veterans Memorial Auditorium (VMA) building's structure and systems. The report concluded that the building’s perimeter foundation is structurally sound, and that the elements supporting the domed roof are performing as designed. However, the subgrade below the building has settled significantly. The settlement has damaged the floor slabs, internal sewer and roof drain plumbing, and electrical systems. The report also identified several electrical and mechanical deficiencies, as well as water intrusion in key areas. Accessibility improvements are also required at various locations throughout the facility to meet current standards. Various building systems need to undergo comprehensive upgrades and safety enhancements across various critical aspects, including but not limited to the orchestra pit lift mechanism, gas lines, steel beams, sewer system, roof drains, emergency lighting and guardrails, all of which are intended to ensure the building's structural integrity and longevity. Additionally, general  work like painting walls, restoring entry doors, and replacing electrical equipment will contribute to the overall functionality and visual appeal of the VMA theater building for many years to come.

Funding

The estimated $15.1M project is funded by a one-time funding allotment approved by the Marin County Board of Supervisors.

Public impacts

The facility has been closed to the public during the project.
