On weekdays, Fairfax-Bolinas Road in West Marin is closed from Azalea Hill to Ridgecrest. On weekends, the road will be open, but traffic will be routed through a single-lane with controlled two-way access at milepost 5.73. See project webpage for details. Thank you for your patience while these projects progress.

UPCOMING  EVENT --  Public meeting hosted by FHWA : September 13, 2023, from 5PM to 7PM at the Mill Valley Recreation Center, Cascade Room.  Located at 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA 94941

Muir Woods Road/Frank Valley Road is a two-lane roadway that connects Muir Beach, Mill Valley, and the Muir Woods National Monument. Muir Woods Road is also known as Frank Valley Road. For purposes of this project, it is referred to as Muir Woods Road. Muir Woods Road is the only road providing access to the Muir Woods National Monument from the south. It also provides access to the Mount Tamalpais State Park, which is managed by California Department of Parks and Recreation. A joint Environmental Assessment and Initial Study is being prepared to study proposed improvements to the roadway.

The proposed project will improve 2.4 miles of roadway beginning near the entrance to Muir Woods National Monument and ending at the intersection with State Highway 1 (see map). The project will also improve drainage, replace and realign the substandard bridge over Redwood Creek, stabilize road embankments in areas of slope failure, and improve striping and signage.

The project team includes the following agencies:

  • Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD)
  • Marin County
  • Golden Gate National Recreation Area, National Park Service
  • California Department of Parks and Recreation, State Parks

Funding

The roadway project was selected for Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) funding through the Federal Highway Administration in 2015. FHWA-CFLHD will lead the design and construction of the project and provide funding for the project with local match provided by Marin County. More information about FLAP can be found on the Office of Federal Lands website.

Funding for the proposed bridge work is through the California Department of Transportation Highway Bridge Program.
